This event takes place at Spirit Loft | Toronto, Canada

When: Saturday, December 9th, 2017
3 pm - 6 pm

Cost: $50 + HST

The Spiral Line is a continuous chain of muscles and connective tissue (fascia) that wraps its way around the entire body. How tension is distributed along this longest myofascial line influences your over all posture, balance, coordination and breath capacity. The tissues of the Spiral Line are also the storage site for our potential to equalize after a shocking event. The history of your ability to face challenges are imprinted in these fibres. A recalibration of tension along this spiral net creates a sense of wholeness and grounds the practitioner. Our sense of self-esteem flourishes and a deep sense of belonging blossoms.

In this workshops, we'll explore a playful combination of yin yoga postures, breath work, meditation and pawamuktasan (gentle joint rotations) to develop a greater awareness around this spiral matrix in order to stoke the fire of courage and the grace of compassion.

Expanding our awareness into the Spiral Line can improve:

• Functional balance
• Coordination
• Overall posture
• Breath capacity
• Proprioception (your sixth sense)

Anatomy FUN-damentals Workshop - Manchester

Shoulders - Hips - Spine

Anatomy FUN-damentals is a series of workshops that will illuminate and make clear the mechanics within the shoulders, hips and the spine that connects them.

These workshops are experiential - we will explore asana’s so that you can feel what you are learning. Understanding in this way will allow you to immediately integrate this subject into your day to day teachings.

A yoga instructor who has sound knowledge of the musculoskeletal system has an edge.  You will be able to assist your students with informed intelligence. Anatomy can be mysterious and daunting at first, and it is often the reason why many yoga teachers shy away from the subject. Learning anatomy will help you in three ways. You will be able to expand your private clientele, work safely in classes and deepen your own practice.

In today’s world yoga is being used more and more for therapeutic purposes to treat specific ailments. Working one-on-one with students to help correct postural imbalances and alleviate pain will keep your clients coming back for more.

In a class setting, not everyone is healthy. Knowing and understanding the most common ailments that affect these joints will allow you to keep all of your students safe without exasperating current conditions. You will be able to give alternative modifications and you will know what to avoid. Your confidence with hands-on adjustments will also grow when you know how a  joint should move.

Expanding your knowledge of anatomy will help you in your own practice. Having a mental picture of what you are feeling in an asana will help you to explore the more subtle nuances of the pose with greater awareness.

This is going to be FUN!!!!!  No previous knowledge of anatomy required.

Anatomy of the Spine

Saturday November 18th, 9am - 1pm
Continuing Education: 4 Hours

Knowing how the spine moves is extremely important for yoga teachers. It should be your primary concern in terms of alignment in all postures. Keeping the spine safe and supported will help to keep your students injury free. This workshop will highlight the true core stabilizers and how to strengthen and stretch them. Understand how to initiate movement from the spine with increased awareness.

Topics

Terms of Movement - All workshops will begin with a review of Terms of Movement so that we have a common language to discuss deeper aspects of anatomy. For example, flexion, extension, rotation, protraction etc.

Introduction of the Spine - anatomy of spine, different regions (namely cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal), special features of the different regions. Identify and the true core stabilizers (namely the transverse abdominis, psoas and thoracic diaphragm)

Spine & Asana - limitations encountered at specific spinal regions during asana practice, ways of overcoming such obstacles

Common Spinal Dysfunction - prolapsed discs/herniation, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, hyper kyphosis and hyper lordosis will be introduced; causes, implications, precautions and treatment.

Asana Application - asana modification, poses to avoid, therapeutic Yoga asanas to the above conditions

Anatomy of the Shoulders

Saturday November 18th, 2pm - 6pm
Continuing Education: 4 Hours

The weight of the world certainly reeks havoc on our shoulders. General wear and tear like carrying a bag repetitively on one side, having a dominant hand and sitting at a computer, over time create imbalances that turn into chronic pain. Anyone who works with their arms overhead like painters, construction workers and athletes also often encounter a repetitive strain injury in the shoulders.

As a yoga teacher, you will inevitably have students in your classes with shoulder restrictions. Knowing which poses and adjustments to avoid as well as knowing the types of movements that will restore balance will help to keep your students injury free.

Topics:

Terms of Movement - All workshops will begin with a review of Terms of Movement so that we have a common language to discuss deeper aspects of anatomy. For example, flexion, extension, rotation, protraction etc.

Introduction to the Shoulder - anatomy of the shoulder (namely the three bones and three joints that make up the  shoulder girdle, the four muscles of the rotator cuff plus the deltoids and other synergists that influence postural tendencies.)

Shoulder and Asana - limitations encountered at specific ranges of motion during asana practice and how to overcome them.

Common Shoulder Dysfunction - torn rotator cuff, frozen shoulder, arthritis and carpel tunnel syndrome (which is a problem felt in the wrist but can be treated by working with the shoulders and neck!) will be introduced; causes, implications, precautions and treatment.

Asana Application - asana modification, poses to avoid, therapeutic Yoga asanas to the above conditions.

Anatomy of the Hips

Sunday, November 19th, 9am - 1pm
Continuing Education: 4 Hours

Happy hips are important for everyone. Simple day to day tasks like walking, climbing stairs, siting down and standing back up again all require a degree of flexibility and strength that can easily be built and maintained with the practice of yoga.
This workshop is open to yoga teachers, runners and cyclists who want to understand the mechanics of the hips and how to safely and effectively strengthen and stretch the muscles that support them. We will also review how to keep the Iliotibial Band (IT Band) healthy and how hip flexibility affects how our knees function. Happy hips often translates to happy knees.

Topics:

Terms of Movement - All workshops will begin with a review of Terms of Movement so that we have a common language to discuss deeper aspects of anatomy. For example, flexion, extension, rotation, protraction etc.

Introduction to the Hips - anatomy of the hips (namely the bones of this ball and socket joint, labrum, hip flexors, adductors, external hip rotators [the Deep Six], the iliotibial band and the gluteus muscle group)

Hips and Asana - Limitations encountered at specific ranges of motion during asana practice and how to overcome them.

Common hip Dysfunction - psoas condition, sciatica, arthritis, torn labrum, hip replacement and bursitis will be introduced; causes, implications, precautions and treatment.

Asana Application - asana modification, poses to avoid, therapeutic Yoga asanas to the above conditions

This event takes place at Spirit Loft | Toronto, Canada

download.jpeg

When: Saturday, October 28th, 2017
3 pm - 6 pm

Cost: $50 + HST

The Deep Front Line is a salient chain of muscles and connective tissue (fascia) that emulate the work of a centre pole of a tent. The way tension is distributed along this principle channel influences one's over all posture, balance, graceful coordination and breath patterning. The tissues of the Deep Front Line are also the storage site for our most intimate stories.  A redistribution of tension along this centre line allows for a more thorough integration of pain and sorrow so that we can equalize and return to joy even in the after math of life’s arduous challenges.

In this workshops, we'll explore a playful combination of yin yoga postures, breath work, meditation and pawamuktasan (gentle joint rotations) to develop a greater awareness around this central matrix.

Expanding our awareness into the Deep Front Line can help improve:
• Functional balance
• Coordination
• Overall posture
• Breath efficiency
• Proprioception (your sixth sense)
